Twixmas – the Festive Gap and Chrimbo-limbo – defines that funny time between Christmas and New Year, where everyone forgets what day it is, eats leftovers for every meal, and generally winds down for the year. It’s the time when every single TV show you’ve been meaning to catch up on has a special episode out for the season… and you still don’t really want to watch them.
I know not everyone gets this time of year off; in fact, this is the first time I’ve been off between Christmas and New Years in six years! I therefore definitely want to make the most of this time off, so I come back refreshed in the new year. But what can you do when the days seem to blend into one? Here are some ideas.
Try a new hobby
Maybe it’s the time to start that hobby you have been putting off for the last few months. How many people say that they want to learn to sketch or bake, but don’t have the time to learn the rest of the year? Find a tutorial and just give it a go, there’s no pressure. I’ve been meaning to learn to crochet since last Christmas, so I’m hoping this year I can settle in and teach myself!
Explore more of your local area
We are lucky enough here in Maidenhead to be right alongside the Thames path which, despite being muddy, is a lovely walk – just don’t forget your wellies! It takes you through a few towns, so you can always stop and grab a coffee to keep you warm. We are also close to several National Trust houses which are always lovely to visit around Christmas, when they are all decorated for the occasion. My family have a Christmas Walk tradition, which has shifted as we have gotten older from being on Christmas to being around Christmas. In general, though, getting outside and exploring your local area is never a bad call.
Read a book you’ve been meaning to read
This is probably how I will spend most of my time off. There’s something very relaxing about being able to cosy up with a good book, with a warm drink and without any distractions. Fiction or Non-fiction, what ever you feel like reading, just enjoy it!
Figure out your New Years resolutions
Everyone sets New Years resolutions differently, and for some people they cause more stress than anything else. But setting reasonable, achievable goals can be really helpful for some people. There’s the classics, like going to the gym and eating healthier, but there can also be the smaller ones, like getting back into a hobby, or decreasing your screen time (which I definitely need to do). A resolution doesn’t have to be drastic, just something that can be helpful to you.
Just relax and enjoy yourself!
This is time off for you to relax; don’t stress yourself out trying to do everything. Sometimes, in order to go into the new year feeling motivated, you just need to stop and relax for a few days.
