There’s no doubt that Christmas movies are an essential part of the holiday season. From Love Actually to The Grinch, Home Alone to The Polar Express, these films are beloved staples - nostalgic, festive, and widely celebrated for their timeless popularity. Yet, in my opinion, there’s one Christmas movie that’s often overlooked: Klaus, the Netflix Original released in 2019. Hands down, it’s the best (and most underrated) holiday movie out there not only for its exceptional storytelling, but also for reminding us about the power of emotionally resonant content in connecting with a wider audience.
Klaus is an animated movie that offers a fresh take on the origin of Santa Claus, delivering a narrative that’s as unique as it is wholesome. With a remarkable 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is creatively crafted, packed with genuinely funny moments, and filled with detailed character arcs. There’s warmth, there’s spirit, and it is truly enjoyable. My three sisters and I have made it a tradition to watch it together every year since it was released five years ago - and we’re all in our 20s!
Klaus earned an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature, won a British Academy Film Award for Best Animation, and took home SEVEN Annie Awards! This challenges traditional views of cinema, suggesting streaming platforms are producing a new, and real sense of originality that often goes overlooked in favor of big blockbuster Hollywood movies. While the voice cast includes notable stars like Joan Cusack and J.K. Simmons, Klaus isn't just another commercial movie - it’s an emotionally-driven narrative that strikes a rare balance: calm yet wild, funny yet sensitive, and light yet dark.
In this era of blockbuster franchises dominating the cinematic landscape, Klaus therefore stands out for being refreshingly different for its central themes of community, selflessness, and redemption. I believe that across all forms of media - from social, to film and TV, radio, to OOH - everyone can learn from Klaus about the power of embracing storytelling that evokes a more authentic and emotional response. This shift is driven by an audience craving content that resonates on a deeper level, and Klaus is a prime example of how well-crafted, heartfelt stories can thrive in today’s market. All forms of media can attest to the growing demand for original content, and this trend mustn't go ignored.
